Nora Baladerian, Ph.D. Workshop Description: For those who have not worked extensively with individuals with disabilities, this seminar will review some basics related to critical information including the types of disabilities there are, how and when they begin, how they affect the individual personally, socially, academically, vocationally, emotionally, intellectually and with communication. Issues include differences in appearance, expressive and receptive speech and language, cultural issues and informational barriers. We will also discuss other barriers to equal participation in society created and sustained by negative attitudes, stereotypes, myths and failures to consider participation of individuals with disabilities as a client or colleague. We will discuss universal accessibility within the crime victim services system both in service and physical plant issues. Course Outline I. Who has a disability? A. Definitions by ADA B. Students will be able to describe at least 5 different types of disability . Students will be able to discern the difference between mental retardation and mental illness .
